The three web development career areas: which one is right for you?
If you love technology, are ready to embrace a challenge and want to build the latest websites, web development may be the perfect career for you. Web development is an exciting and in-demand career area. But you may not be aware that there are three different areas of web development. What are these three areas, and which one is right for you?
Front-end web development
Front-end web developers (which also includes user experience designers, user interface designers and mobile designers) create and maintain websites and mobile applications. They use web languages to write web pages and also perform testing and light coding.
They’re responsible for the parts of the website that you see and engage with—also known as the user experience. Layout, imagery, design, colours, fonts, menu and content flow are all front-end web development tasks.
Despite the creation of WordPress and other website templates, front-end web developers are still in great demand.
Because they have the skills to customize and personalize websites and do the layout and design for various devices, front-end web developers are attractive to employers. In fact, front-end web developers were included in The Creative Group’s list of Top 10 Creative and Marketing jobs.
Front end web development tools include:
- Animate CC (previously known as Flash)
- Bootstrap Framework
Back-end web development
Back-end web developers are more IT focused, and are responsible for the technology that powers the front-end. They work with applications, servers and databases and deal with the programming, data and storage side of website development.
They are also concerned with database transmission. For example, back-end web developers monitor how much data transmits between the user and server so it doesn’t consume all the data on the user’s mobile devices.
Back-end website developers also handle more complex website applications, such as adding online shopping capabilities. However, many organizations are now purchasing modules which allow the front end developers to install the shopping capabilities.
Back-end web development tools include:
- Ruby-Ruby on Rails
Full stack web development
Full stack web developers have knowledge of both front- and back-end web development techniques. They can be involved with the front-end process of designing and creating the user experience, the layout and application, or the back-end: the server side, the performance and the coding. In short, they’re comfortable with both front-end and back-end web development.
